Victorian Gentleman's Fashion

Through the Victorian period the general style of mens fashion did not change massively, instead small changes in style and moderation of fashion fit. For example, the frock coat in the 1840's was not the same as the frock coat in the 1860's, the roundness in the chest was changed, the width of the back, the fashionable waistline and fit of the garment. The Victorian gentleman however did have a lot of cloths for different occasions, morning, evening, lounge, leisure, sort wear, hunting etc. All with different fits and styles, which changed over the century.

The 1830's laid the foundations of male tailoring, the garments were constructed with waist seams and side seams, trousers were cut with fly's and nearly every type of garment had been invented and worn. Like the ones stated above. (1830's is not Victorian though is the bases on the fashion from the decade before the late 1840's when it was then Victorian.) Its a good idea  to know about how mens fashion in the Victorian times was effect by the 1830's.

I have done some research and found these useful break downs of mens fashion through the decades of 1830s- 1890s. Although, just an over view they are useful to place tailoring into context and have given me a greater knowledge into the fashion of men. There is also some very useful information which can be used when I have choose the style of suit I will make to figure the date, style and cut.  This will help to place the costume into context, as well as useful information to look back on in the future.

These has been scanned from 'The Victorian Tailor':
